What is Green Hat Marketing?

Before we can tell you what Green Hat Marketing is we need to explain a couple common terms in the marketing industry. These are terms that every (decent) marker knows and understands.


White Hat Marketing refers to things that Google (and other search engines) like to see. For example, Good content, proper SEO structure on your website. Natural link building, real traffic and real social signals to your website. White Hat Marketing should be the foundation of any successful marketing campaign.


Black Hat Marketing is any type of marketing strictly against Google Guidelines. A lot of marketers will use these strategies for quick wins (because they still work). Examples of Black hat tactics are building fake website networks and linking to your site, keyword stuffing and buying fake traffic. These may work in the short run but in the long run they can hurt you.

That brings us back to Green Hat Marketing. Green Hat Marketing is built on white hat marketing with a little extra “oomph”. We still build out fantastic mobile optimized websites, still provide fantastic keyword rich (but not stuffed) content but where we differ is we actively look for things that Google likes. So, while White Hat has the “build it and they will come” approach and Black Hat has the “Fake it till you make it” approach, Green Hat has the “Build it right and help Google find how awesome we are the right way” approach. It’s amazing what you can do when you follow the rules then take the extra steps to promote your clients websites the right way.
